Crowdfunding Spotlight: The Smart Kettle

The founders are asking for donations to tip them over £165,000 by 5 May to put their prototype into production.

Each week we look at the most talked about crowdfunding campaigns - this week we explore Appkettle, a smart kettle from Yorkshire.

What's the pitch?

Appkettle is a smart kettle that lets owners set the temperature of water and flick the kettle on using wifi.

How much is needed?

The founders are asking for donations to tip them over £165,000 by Tuesday, 5 May. By hitting their goal, they'll be able to go in to full production, putting their prototype into the hands of the donators.

What does it do?

The Appkettle and its smartphone app doesn't just let you switch the kettle on from your desk or as you walk to work, it allows you to see how much water is left and how many cups it will fill as well as set a desired temperature.

It's perfect for anyone with a baby who needs milk at a lower temperature. It also has a scheduling option so there's no way you can forget that it's time for tea.

It also gives you energy consumption data so you can work out the cost of your brew.

How much is it?

For a £10 donation, you'll receive a branded mug, a selection of fine teas and become part of the Appkettle smart community.

By donating £79, you can get yourself one of the first off the production line. Pitch in with £500 and walk away with four kettles for the office – as well as ten branded mugs.

When will it arrive?
Appkettles will be landing on kitchen surfaces from December 2015. Shipping is free to anywhere in the world.

What other crowdfunding campaigns are hot right now?

According to the social media research by Opinium, Indiegogo's cyber security device, SIPN has generated almost 3,500 global tweets in the past week.

Indiegogo's iKlip, "the world's fastest flash drive for iPhone" was also making Twitter waves while over on Kickstarter, yet another 3D printer called Tiko got tongues wagging.
