Google Launches tool to run android apps to chrome

The tool is primarily intended for developers to test out their own apps.

Google on April 3 released ARC Welder, an app for the Chrome web browser and Chrome OS that lets users run Android apps. Google said it developed the tool in part to encourage Android developers to port their apps to Chrome OS.

ARC Welder is compatible with Chrome OS and recent versions of the Chrome browser. Users would then need to download Android apps (distributed as .apk files) from Google Play using an extension like APK Downloader or via a third-party website.

Google in 2013 released several Chrome apps that can run outside a browser window and do things like work offline and send notifications directly to the user's operating system. At launch, Google highlighted apps like to-do list creator Wunderlist (pictured) and read-it-later service Pocket.
